Olympic Day: A Big Step Toward an Ambitious Future

Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), has emphasized the significance of the Olympic Day as a pathway towards a game-changing future for sports development.

Ghana’s celebration of the event, under the theme “Move, Learn and Discover” took place at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday with over 500 participants from 21 federations being present.

The celebration, which started with a walk across the streets of Accra also aimed at promoting physical activity, sports development, and unity among Ghanaians.

The GOC President speaking in an interview said “We want the event to be very big and possibly go to other regions so that they will also experience the Olympic day.

“We are just trying to put in place a few structures so that we can start working well so this is a way of announcing something great ahead”.

He stated that with bold initiatives on the horizon, the GOC would in a few months put in place its committees to continue an impressive performance, driving innovation and fostering a culture of excellence.

On the celebration, Mr. Akpokavie stressed on the core values of Olympism, which are excellence, respect, and friendship.

“Excellence because you must be the best of the best, whether in sports, academics or anything you do, you must aspire to be the best of the best. Respect because you must respect yourself and respect your neighbour. Friendship, because we are all a big family, no discrimination whether you are a girl or a boy, so we work together as a team” he explained.

The GOC President revealed that his team was working to engage the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to establish a sports authority to develop sports in schools.

He thanked the various federations for making this year’s Olympic Day celebration a success.

Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority said the core elements of the Olympic Day is a reminder of the role sports plays in bringing individuals together.

He called on all federations to embrace teamwork, unity, and collaboration as Ghana continues to make strides in the global sporting arena.
