Africa-Press – Ghana. A visiting couple, Drs Santana and Karen Williams, have paid the medical bills of eight women at the 37 Military Hospital’s Maternity Ward, amounting to over GH₵18,000.00 as part of their 30th wedding anniversary celebration.

The couple also donated sets of curtains to the hospital’s gynecology unit to enhance the comfort and privacy of patients.

Dr Karen Williams said the gesture was a personal and meaningful way to give back to society, particularly to women who are vulnerable and struggling to meet the cost of childbirth.

“We don’t really need anything. To be a woman and impoverished and unable to pay your bills can be daunting,” she said.

She noted that, “Philanthropy is what we do as a couple, and supporting women and the marginalized is close to our hearts. This will be a continuous gesture.”

Dr Williams said their philanthropic work in Ghana began in 2023, when they supported the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, and they planned to continue aiding the health sector and other causes close to them.

The donation was facilitated by TEAM CSR Ghana, a local non-governmental organization (NGO) working with partners both locally and in the diaspora to drive community-based development through education, health, water, and infrastructure projects.

Mr Jonathan Akuamoah, CEO and Founder of TEAM CSR Ghana, said the couple’s donation aligned with the organization’s mission of inspiring visitors to make meaningful contributions during their time in Ghana.

“One of the biggest things we do is the Water for Life Initiative, we’ve provided boreholes to over 120 villages, serving over 200,000 Ghanaians,” Mr Akuamoah said.

“Every month we host groups from the diaspora. We don’t just show them the sights; we encourage them to give back. When the Williamses saw what previous visitors had done, they wanted to help too.”

He said the organization uses photographs and media coverage to show the impact of donations, motivating others to contribute.

Hospital officials, including Lt. Grace Aidoo, Senior Midwifery Officer, and Capt. Kofi Agyemang, Health Services Administrator at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Division, received the donation and thanked the couple for their support.

“We are very thankful for this thoughtful gesture. Some of our patients struggle to pay for their care, and this support brings real relief and hope,” Lt. Aidoo said.

They also called on other philanthropists, especially members of the Ghanaian diaspora, to support healthcare facilities and patients in need.

The eight women whose medical bills were cleared expressed appreciation to the couple, describing the donation as a great source of comfort in a difficult moment.
