Politics: NPP Poised for Comeback – Afenyo-Markin

Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has only stumbled, not been defeated, and is preparing for a strong comeback.

Addressing the NPP’s Annual Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday, he urged members to shed despair, embrace renewal, and reclaim the party’s legacy through unity, discipline, and shared purpose.

“We shall rise again. The elephant has only stumbled. It has not been defeated,”he declared.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin emphasised the vital role of the youth and Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) in the party’s revival, encouraging them to stay grounded in party values and to engage respectfully with elders.

“You, the youth, are not just the future of this Party—you are its energy, its voice, and its conscience. Learn from the elders. Don’t insult them. Absorb their wisdom and lead with clarity,” he said.

Reflecting on the 2024 electoral loss, Mr. Afenyo-Markin rejected the notion of failure, attributing the defeat to unprecedented global and domestic challenges including the banking sector clean-up, the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and a hung Parliament.

“No government, no government in our democratic history faced this scale of compounded crisis. Yet, in the driving seat, we held the line,”he said.

“That was leadership tested best in a major crisis. We faced a crisis and handed over an economy with stronger GDP growth than what we inherited in 2017.”

He accused the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of capitalising on the NPP’s achievements under the guise of new policy initiatives such as the 24-hour economy.

“Mahama’s government is taking propaganda credit, reaping where it has not sown, when they talk about resetting. They are simply rebranding our achievements and marketing them as their own. Let no one be deceived,” he said.

The Minority Leader urged members to rally behind the Conference theme, “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” and forge a united path toward victory in 2028.

“It is a charge, it is a call to realign, to renew and to rise together. And we rise again in unity and in the enduring spirit of our party, our great NPP. Let us go back to our roots. Let us rebel with courage. Let us reimagine our future.

“Let us reclaim the spirit that built this party. A spirit of sacrifice, of loyalty, of conviction. We’ve done it before. We can do it again. And let it be that by the grace of God, we will,” he added.

The two-day conference, running from July 19 to 20, has brought together over 5,500 delegates to deliberate on constitutional amendments and strategise for the future.

The event was marked by calls for healing, discipline, and renewed grassroots engagement.
