Africa-Press – Ghana. The Progressive Intellectuals (PI), a coalition of Ghanaian university lecturers and researchers, has praised President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for significant achievements within their first 120 days in office.

According to the group, the government has fulfilled over 50 per cent of its commitments and made measurable progress on an additional 42 per cent outlined in its social contract with Ghanaians.

In a statement signed by its President, Professor Yunus Dumbe, PI praised the government’s commitment to addressing national issues and improving lives.

“These achievements mark significant milestones which demonstrate both focus and determination… We encourage the government to continue honoring its pledges to the electorate, as a means of keeping faith, deepening democratic accountability and upholding responsible governance,” it said.

The group also acknowledged the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against major international currencies, describing it as a factor in reducing the cost of living.

“We have also taken note of the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against major international currencies. This has contributed to the stabilization of prices for goods and services, ultimately reducing the cost of living for many citizens.

“It is a positive development that should be sustained through sound economic policies and prudent fiscal management,” the statement said.

PI urged all relevant ministries and agencies to remain focused on implementing the NDC’s manifesto.

“Four years is a limited time in governance, and every effort must be made to ensure the efficient delivery of policy initiatives and development programmes,” it added.

The group, however, expressed concern about illegal mining and called for the immediate repeal of the Legislative Instrument (LI) that allowed mining in forest reserves and water bodies.

It further urged the government to implement strict security and regulatory measures to prevent illegal mining and protect the environment.

PI reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts that promote accountable governance, national development, and environmental protection.
