Africa-Press – Ghana. State expropriation of foreign-owned assets can have repercussions, warns Russian President Vladimir Putin amid a new surge of Western sanctions to punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
“Just so no one forgets, this is a double-edged sword,” he said in a videoconference with state officials broadcast on state TV. During the session, he complained about foreign pressure on Russian state-owned gas firm Gazprom, Germany recently put part of a Gazprom subsidiary under control of a government agency, noting there were “major efforts” underway in other countries.
Russia has also considered expropriating foreign businesses, partially as a way to keep them operational, after Western owners pulled out in protest of the invasion, and amid fear of being caught up by Western sanctions.
