Africa-Press – Ghana. Residents of Sabon Zango, a suburb of Accra, are intensifying efforts against drug peddling through the “Zango Against Drugs” campaign.

With the slogan “No bunker, no junkie,” youth groups, backed by the community Chief and other opinion leaders, have spent the past month engaging various groups to raise awareness and warn against the dangers of drug abuse.

Two weeks ago, anti-drug abuse campaigners raided shops, confiscating and destroying illicit drugs discreetly sold on the streets.

Last Sunday, they targeted dens, also known as bunkers, that served as havens for drug consumption, raiding locations including Zongo Market, Fudu Fudu, and Unguwawan Makafai.

As part of efforts to find lasting solutions to the problem, the community organised a forum on April 13, 2025, under the auspices of Chief Yahya Hamisu Baako, the Sabon Zango Chief.

The event, chaired by former Minister for Inner Cities and Zongo Development, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiqque Boniface, was attended by representatives of the Ghana Police Service.

Mr. Boniface described illicit drugs as a powerful tool of destruction, particularly affecting communities with great potential.

“The destruction of the youth through illicit drugs has been central to destroying the future and keeping communities impoverished,” he noted.

He urged young people to make wise choices and channel their energies into ventures that would secure a better future.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of Islamic Affairs, Imam Husein Abdur Rahim Husein, called for stakeholder support in combating drug abuse.

He urged opinion leaders not to interfere, stressing that the law must take its course when individuals are found culpable in the illicit drug trade.

“Let no one go to the Chief and say so and so is our son, our grandson or he is an indigene of Zango,” he said.

ACP Husein also called on the Municipal Assembly and Member of Parliament for the area to support the campaign.

The anti-drug abuse initiative, which has gained traction on social media, is now being replicated in nearby Zongo communities, including Shukura and Nima.
