Sawa Energy Secures EU Funding for East Africa Clean Power

Africa-Press – Ghana. Sawa Energy, an Ugandan renewable energy company, has secured EUR 2.5 million (USD 2.9 million) in equity funding from the EU-backed ElectriFI initiative to expand its solar and energy storage offerings for enterprises in Uganda and Rwanda.

Established in 2021, Sawa Energy supplies commercial and industrial clients with fully financed solar PV and battery systems under long-term agreements, offering rates lower than standard grid tariffs. This approach seeks to substitute diesel generators with cleaner and more affordable energy solutions.

The investment from ElectriFI, directed through its Uganda Country Window, is anticipated to attract further institutional funding and speed up the deployment of renewable energy systems throughout the region.

CEO Samuel Kaufman stated that the collaboration would enable Sawa to “reduce emissions, lower costs, and improve productivity” for businesses in East Africa, while EDFI Management Company characterized the agreement as progress toward “eliminating polluting diesel power” in the region.
