Africa-Press – Ghana. The Divisional Officer Grade One (DOI), Usman Issahaku Mohammed, the Berekum East Municipal Fire Safety Officer in the Bono Region, has advised traders at the Berekum Central Market to desist from cooking in their shops to prevent fire outbreaks.
He said the Berekum fire tender had been grounded for some time now, and advised the market women to be cautious of the way and manner they handled naked fires at the market.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Berekum, DOI Mohammed said electrical faults were also contributing to domestic fire outbreaks and traders and residents in general needed to check their wiring systems and possibly re-wire their shops and residences after 25 years.
He also advised the public to always check and switch off their electrical appliances and gadgets before they left home for work.
In another interview, the Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One (ADOI) Derick Boateng, the Berekum Municipal Fire Education Officer said it was an offence for the market women and traders to send Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to cook in their shops at the central market.
He warned that culprits would be prosecuted, and urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspects to the service, saying that practice was also contributing to fire outbreaks in the municipality.
