Africa-Press – Ghana. Member of Parliament for Bodi, Sampson Ahi, has dismissed the Minority Caucus’ claims that there is leadership crisis in the country because of the absence of the President, Vice President and Speaker of Parliament at the same time without the swearing-in of an Acting President.
The legislator, also the Deputy Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, said that Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the acting Chief Justice, automatically assumes the mantle as acting President with the absence of the three personalities.
Mr Ahi told the media in an interview at Parliament House in Accra on Tuesday that, there was no constitutional provision that required the swearing-in of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as acting President, and thus described the Minority’s stance as “petty and unfortunate”.
The Minority Caucus in Parliament, on Monday, May 12, 2025, issued a press statement to draw the attention of the public to a constitutional breach emanating from the absence of the President, Vice President and the Speaker of Parliament from the country without the swearing-in of an acting President.
In a statement signed by Mr John Darko, the NPP MP for Suame and Legal Counsel for the Minority Caucus, condemned the simultaneous absence of President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, and Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Bagbin from the country.
The group referenced Article 60 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, describing the government’s action as blatant violation of the supreme law of the land.
The issue has sparked wide-spread public discussions with some critics alluding to a constitutional vacuum created by the absence of the three powerful personalities.
