Africa-Press – Ghana. Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Stephen Amoah has hit back at critics who blame the current cedi depreciation on President Akufo-Addo’s government.
In a media interaction on Wednesday, May 29, the Nhyiaeso MP said the problem of cedi depreciation has been with various successive government and not peculiar with the current government.
The former MASLOC boss explained that import-driven nature of the country’s economy accounts for the cedi depreciation.
He said “unless one is suffering from unconscious incompetence or displaying intellectual dishonesty that would say that cedi depreciation is NPP government” noting that the problem is a “ritual” one.
Dr. Amoah, however, hinted that Dr. Bawumia will come up with a long-term framework to deal with the recurring cedi depreciation when given the nod to be President.
“It’s an issue that needs nationalistic attention. So far as we keep on being imported-driven economy, we’ll be having problems with cedi because we import almost everything. But Insha-Allah, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, next year if he comes, we are going to design a long term framework to deal with the cedi,” he stated.
