Africa-Press – Ghana. The Electoral Commission (EC) has extended an invitation to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for further engagement to address concerns about the credibility of the voters’ register.

While confirming receipt of a petition from the NDC after its demonstration for “free and credible” voters’ register on Tuesday, the Commission said the process of producing the final register “is in its early stages”.

A statement signed and issued by Mr Samuel Tettey, Deputy EC Chair in charge of Operations, said the Commission would respond to the NDC’s petition in the coming days.

“The Commission is mindful that the Voters Register is the bedrock of credible, fair and transparent Elections. We assure the NDC and all stakeholders of our avowed commitment to delivering a credible and robust final register ahead of the December 2024 Elections.

“In the meantime, our doors remain open. We look forward to engaging the NDC on their concerns,” the statement said.

The NDC staged a nationwide protest on Tuesday to demand what its officials described as free and fair electoral process.

The Party has requested for an independent forensic audit of the Information Technology systems of the EC to guarantee the credibility of the register ahead of the December 7 polls.

The EC at a press conference last week said it had “largely” resolved the discrepancies in the Voters’ Register.

The Commission said the request for a forensic audit of the Voters’ Register was “misguided” and “premature”.

It explained that the Voters’ Exhibition Exercise offered an avenue for the auditing of the Register.

“The Exhibition Exercise enables citizens to verify their details and allows for the unearthing of discrepancies in the register. Additionally, it provides for the correction of discrepancies in the Register. This is not new. This has been the practice since 1992. The process of cleaning and strengthening the Voters Register is well defined by law.”
