Women Bee Farmers Receive Training on Beekeeping and Management

Africa-Press – Ghana. Women Bee Farmers have received comprehensive training to build their capacities on beekeeping and bee health to promote sustainable beekeeping practices to t boost the economy of that sector.

The participants were taken through bee biology, hive management, bee health management, maintaining healthy bee colonies, hive inspection, honey harvesting, pollination, and ecosystem services, among others.

The key objective was to enhance the knowledge and skills of women bee farmers with support from the British High Commission through the Animal Health System Strengthening Project (AHSS) and the UK’s Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

The workshop brought together stakeholders from various institutions, including the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ghana, the Veterinary Services Directorate, Women in Agriculture Development (WIAD), and the Livestock and Poultry Research Centre.

Madam Paulina Addy, Director of Women in Agriculture Development (WIAD) of the Ministry of Agriculture, commended the initiative to build the capacity of farmers in that sector and particularly empowering women in agriculture.

She said beekeeping offered immense opportunity for women to improve their livelihoods, contribute to food security, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Mrs Martha Adjorlolo, Co-Founding President of the National Association of Women Bee Farmers was hopeful that participants had gained comprehensive understanding of bee keeping and management to enhance their livelihoods as well as contribute to the growth of the industry.

She thanked the donors for their collaborative efforts and assured of the association’s commitment to supporting more women bee farmers to promote development of the bee keeping industry in Ghana.
