Africa-Press – Ghana. World Vision Ghana, a Christian humanitarian organisation, has donated educational materials to pupils of Appiatse in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality. The items worth over GHS 76,000.00 included over 2,000 exercise books, about 500 school bags and school uniforms, and other essentials.

Speaking at the presentation of the items to the Municipal Education Officer, Mr Richard Okai, Integrated Programmes Director at World Vision Ghana, said they were devastated with the news of the explosion that occurred back in January, therefore mobilised the needed funds to supply them with the learning materials.

“World Vision, having witnessed the devastation of the explosion at Appiatse, engaged key stakeholders to do an assessment of the needs of the community after the explosion.

“For us as a child-focus organisation, we were determined to put smiles on their faces especially during learning hours, the reason for the provision of these educational essentials.

“This is just the first step of our support to the community and we would continue to mobilise all forms of support to give them some kind of respite through these challenging times,” he said.

Madam Mary Vida Coffie, Municipal Director of Education for Prestea Huni Valley Municipality, who received the items, expressed gratitude to World Vision for thinking about the educational welfare of the children.

According to Madam Coffie, the Municipal Education Office had offered counselling support to the children who went through the explosion trauma especially for those whose parents were deceased or infirmed.

“We have asked teachers at various schools to continue the counselling of affected students and also asked them to identify children who were traumatized so that extra attention would be given to them,” she said.

She also disclosed that there were plans to get a structure in the Appiatse village where students would attend evening classes with teachers assigned to help them in their assignments.

Madam Coffie expressed gratitude to all who aided in the reconstruction of Appiatse and called for more support from well-meaning Ghanaians and philanthropic organisations
