Call for nominations: Ghana Music Awards USA 2021

The organisers of the 2021 Ghana Music Awards USA are inviting US-based Ghanaian musicians who have released songs between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2020 to submit entries.

The event is organised by Don’s Music Production in partnership with 2Geez Entertainment and Highlife Media USA. It was first held in October 2020 to recognise outstanding musicians in the diaspora, particularly in the US, who have played key roles in promoting Ghanaian music.

Nominations are open for Best US-Based Entertainment MC/DJ of the Year, US-Based Discovery Act of the Year, US-Based African Act of the Year, US-Based Female Artiste of the Year, US-Based Male Artist of the Year, US-Based Best Gospel Song of the Year and US-Based Gospel Artist of the Year.

The rest are US-Based Female Vocalist of the Year, US-Based Best Male Vocalist of the Year, US-Based Afropop Song of the Year, US-Based Best Rapper of the Year, Most Popular US-Based Artist of the Year, US-Based Producer/Sound Engineer of the Year, US-Based Music Video of the Year and Best US-Based Afropop Artist.

Interested musicians or their representatives can submit works by completing the nomination form here(link is external), after which they will receive an email confirmation of their filing. Applicants are advised to not hit the ‘submit’ button twice.

The deadline for submissions is 15 March.

At the maiden edition held in New Jersey, rapper Sarkodie was named Artist of the Year, with gospel singer Diana Hamilton taking home the Gospel Artist of the Year and Gospel Song of the Year awards. Hiplife group Keche won in the Group of the Year category, while Kofi Kinaata picked up the Highlife Artist of the Year and Highlife Song of the Year awards. Other winners on the night were Efya, King Promise and reggae-dancehall singer Stonebwoy.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian broadcaster and artist manager Kwasi Aboagye was on 12 January announced as the new board chair of the awards platform. Aboagye succeeds music producer Kwesi Ernest and will be at the helm of the event’s second and third editions in 2021 and 2022.
