Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, has commended the remarkable innovation and quality of work within Ghana’s tech ecosystem, following a familiarisation tour of tech companies in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions.

He lauded President Mahama’s decision to rebrand the ministry as the Ministry for Digital Technology and Innovations, stating that the name aptly reflects the vibrant digital and innovation landscape currently thriving in the country.

The minister began his tour at Zipline in Suhum, a drone delivery company that operates a medical drone centre supplying essential health items to facilities across the region.

He praised Zipline for the volume of drone deliveries made since its inception and encouraged the company to expand its services beyond healthcare into sectors such as agriculture and education.

“Since its service is a specialised technology, we will be glad to partner with you to provide specialised training in flight operations, warehousing, and inventory,” Mr George said.

“You can also consider training 10,000 people for the government as part of your corporate social responsibility.”

He assured Zipline of the government’s readiness to explore collaborative opportunities to maximise the utility of drone technology for the benefit of more Ghanaians.

At GrowForMe, a web-based agricultural crowdfunding platform that helps scale farming operations through sponsorships, the Minister reiterated the ministry’s commitment to leading digital policy development across sectors, including agri-tech, health-tech, fin-tech, and edu-tech.

“The ministry has a new direction, and we are going to provide leadership and policy direction in the digital technology space,” he stated.

“I am happy to see what you are doing here.”

He announced plans to develop legislation for agri-tech, establish a sector roadmap, and engage the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade for strategic support.

Mr. George emphasised President Mahama’s focus on democratising access to funding, technology, and mechanisation for farmers.

To support GrowForMe’s initiative, the Minister personally invested GH¢15,000 via the platform’s mobile app towards a three-acre soybean farm in the Northern Region.

“This investment is going to support farmers, most likely women, to purchase fertilizer and inputs for the planting season. In a year’s time, I expect to recoup my investment with interest,” he said.

Mr George also visited Shaq Express, a tech-driven service company, and encouraged them to apply for the ‘Adumawura Programme’ for grant funding.

He advised them to reach out to the Ghana Enterprise Agency for additional support.

The Minister concluded his tour at Huawei Ghana, where he commended the company’s commitment to supporting President Mahama’s “One Million Coders” initiative.

He noted that Huawei had pledged to train 100,000 Ghanaians in digital skills over four years—at no cost to the Government.

“Huawei has presented a four-year training plan, including online learning, university-based training, and in-person sessions at Huawei headquarters in China,” Mr George announced.

“On behalf of President Mahama, the ministry, and the entire government, I express our gratitude to Huawei Ghana.”

He said preparations would begin immediately to launch the first phase of training, targeting 25,000 participants this year.

He noted that the collaboration would significantly advance tech diplomacy and strengthen Ghana-China relations.
