MP wants medics 'pushing files' at Afya House sent to counties

Africa-Press – Kenya. Endebess MP Robert Pukose has called on the Ministry of Health to shed off excess workforce from Afya House.

Pukose, who is the chairperson of the health committee at the National Assembly on Monday challenged the ministry to conduct an assessment of the workforce at the headquarters.

He noted that some are qualified to offer services at the county level.

The MP was speaking during the launch of the health facility census at Afya House.

The lawmaker said the assessment should not just focus on the counties but should also involve the headquarters.

“You have about 300 doctors working in Afya House. Why do you need all the 300?,” posed Pukose.

“You have doctors who are well qualified, people who are surgeons or obstetricians or pediatricians just pushing files from one office to another. That one should not be the case,” he said.

“I think you should also do that assessment and make sure that those that you don’t require can do capacity building and help the counties for us to achieve good healthcare within our country,” he added.

In a rejoinder, Health CS Susan Nakhumicha acknowledged that there is excess workforce at Afya House.

She said the ministry had finalised on the structures that will see placement of people into various roles and responsibilities.

“Chair, I want to agree with you that we have excess capacity at the headquarters because health services are done at the counties,” she said.

“After we have classified people according to their duties and responsibilities at the national level, those remaining will be donated to the counties,” she added.
