Africa-Press – Kenya. State Department for Sports PS Elijah Mwangi has assured MPs that Kenya is on course to host the Africa National Championship (CHAN) and African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.

Appearing before the Committee on Regional Integration, Mwangi said the government is committed to making CHAN and AFCON a resounding success, a memorable football extravaganza that will showcase Kenya’s ability to host world-class tournaments.

He noted that the Talanta Sports City, a 60,000-capacity stadium, was to be completed by December 2025. “Due to the delay in the commencement of the contract, the contractor committed to complete the work by the end of February 2026,” he stadium.

The PS further noted that the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, a 55,000 seat stadium has a completion date of April 2025. “Works are ongoing, and the contractor is set to complete and hand over the stadium.

” He said the Kipchoge Keino Stadium is expected to be completed by May 2026.

“It is a standby competition venue for AFCON 2027.

” Mwangi said the Nyayo National Stadium refurbishment works is at 60 per cent and would be completed by December 2025.

“For AFCON 2027, each host country is required to pay a hosting budget support fee of US$30 million.

The three host countries shall therefore jointly pay a hosting contribution of US$ 90 million. These monies shall be used to pay for all the tournament expenses.

” The Confederation of African Football (CAF), at its executive committee meeting held on September 27, 2023, granted the three East African Countries Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania the rights to host the 9th Edition of the CAF Total Energies African Cup of Nations Championships (CHAN) 2025 tournament and the 36th Edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The three host countries have subsequently held several consultative meetings amongst themselves and with CAF to ensure that preparations for the two tournaments continue seamlessly.

The CAF top leadership under its President Patrice Motsepe, have visited the three countries severally to inspect the facilities and hold meetings with the top leadership of the three countries. Several CAF delegations and inspection teams have also visited the three countries to assess the preparations to host the games.
