Africa-Press – Kenya. Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has called for unity in the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) following weeks of infighting.
Just a few days after hinting at starting his own party, the DAP-K deputy party leader called on the party officials to work together to resolve any issues emerging in the party.
Natembeya was speaking on Tuesday, August 12, at a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting attended by party leader Eugene Wamalwa, with whom he has been embroiled in internal wrangles.
“Let’s stop the hate. We are just members of DAP-K. Whatever you heard out there, leave it there,” Natembeya stated.
“Let us leave our own prejudices and our own conclusions out there and come here with an open mind and confront issues facing our party today, and see if we can solve them peacefully. If we can’t, we are still brothers and sisters, and the world is not ending.”
Natembeya further emphasised the need to resolve the issues, revealing that having a strong party in the Western region would position the party at an advantage.
He highlighted the 4.5 million voters in the region being eyed by other politicians, maintaining that the party needed to be the most preferred in the region so that it would find itself at the national table.
Natembeya’s sentiments come just days after he hinted at ditching DAP-K if its leadership continues to resist internal reforms.
On August 7, he claimed that he had been suggesting reforms, including that the party rebrand and expand beyond Western Kenya, but his suggestions had been blocked by the party.
“The field is open, and Kenya is a democratic state. I can formulate another party or defect to another one, because we have to get it right,” the governor said.
“For now, I believe that if the party remains as it is, my agenda and opinions cannot be achieved,” he added.
Days earlier, Wamalwa had urged his deputy not to defect from the party but to face up to him for the party nominations if he wanted to be a flagbearer and vie for the presidency.
“My brother George Natembeya, you do not have to leave or cause a coup in our party, DAP-Kenya, to become Party Leaders or Presidential candidates. You are welcome to face me for the Presidential ticket in free and fair nominations,” Wamalwa said on August 1.
