Africa-Press – Kenya. The highly anticipated development tour of the Ukambani region by President William Ruto has been called off following the sudden death of ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The week-long tour was set to begin today, October 15, ahead of the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui. Ruto was expected to crisscross the three counties of Kitui, Makueni, and Machakos to launch and inspect key infrastructure projects.

According to the initial programme, the President was scheduled to kick off the tour in Mwingi West, to launch the Kwasiku-Migwani-Mbondoni road project, before proceeding to Kitui East to commission the Zombe-Mwitika road.

Later in the day, he was expected in Kangundo to launch the Kangundo-Mwala road tarmacking. It was not immediately clear when the President would embark on the postponed tour, with State House sources indicating that a new schedule will be communicated.

On Friday, the Head of State was to preside over a series of events, including the Email-Ukia road project in Kibwezi West, Ikutha-Mutha road in Kitui South, the affordable housing project in Kitui Central, and the official opening of Ithookwe Stadium.

The President was also set to attend a church service in Mwingi Central on Sunday, before leading the nation in Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui on Monday, October 20.

The final leg of the tour was to cover Makueni, Mwala, and Machakos, where Ruto would inspect and commission multiple development projects. This includes the Wote affordable housing programme, Kivandini-Miseleni road, Mwala cluster water project, and the Mutituni Market.

The tour was to conclude in Mwingi North and Kilome, with the launch of the Kandwia-Kamuwongo road and the commissioning of the Mikuyu bridge respectively.
