Africa-Press – Kenya. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has mourned the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as “a President who won but was never declared.”
In a condolence message released from London, where he is on an official 10-day visit, Kalonzo said he received the news of Raila’s death upon his arrival at Heathrow International Airport.
“I received the devastating news of the death of the Second Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya and my dear brother, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, this morning,” he stated.
Kalonzo paid a glowing tribute to Raila, recalling his resilience, sacrifices, and lifelong struggle for democracy and justice in Kenya.
“Raila, fondly referred to for decades as ‘Baba’, was more than an enigma. He was a force of nature that kept going despite all the hurdles put in front of him,” he said.
He described Raila as one of Kenya’s longest-serving political detainees and a key figure in the country’s push for democratic reform.
“At each point of release from detention, he would raise his arms to the heavens, his fist clenched in determination—resolved that the tears and scars he suffered would yield democracy and freedom for his beloved Kenya,” Kalonzo recalled.
Reflecting on their political partnership, Kalonzo said Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s transformation was immeasurable. He credited him with playing a pivotal role in the making of the 2010 Constitution, which he said devolved power and strengthened democratic governance.
“For that, we owe him our immense gratitude,” he added.
Kalonzo spoke of his personal connection with Raila, saying their bond was built on shared struggles and mutual respect.
“Since 2013, I had the singular privilege of working closely with my brother—twice as his running mate, both in CORD and NASA, and as his partner in the Azimio La Umoja – One Kenya Coalition. We learnt a lot from each other and shared a lot of pain together,” he said.
He extended condolences to Mama Ida Odinga and the Odinga family, assuring them of his solidarity during this difficult time.
“To Mama Ida, and the entire family—Rosemary, Raila Junior, and Winnie—I want you to know that my family and I stand with you. All Kenyans are praying for you,” Kalonzo said.
He further described Raila as a leader whose influence extended beyond Kenya’s borders.
“Kenya has lost an exemplary leader—a statesman whose vision and courage inspired millions. His loss is not only to his family and country but to the entire African continent,” Kalonzo emphasized.
The Wiper leader concluded by announcing that he would adjust his official engagements in the United Kingdom in honour of Raila’s memory.
“I will miss my brother and friend dearly. I am therefore rearranging my schedule of engagements in the United Kingdom in honour of my fallen brother,” he said.
“May God rest the soul of Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga in everlasting peace,” he concluded.
