Africa-Press – Kenya. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has defended the stability of ODM, dismissing claims of internal divisions. Wanga said ODM remains strong and united and majority of its elected leaders are firmly behind the party.
“There are those saying ODM has crumbled down. Let me tell you that the party is very stable. We had more than 100 MPs,” she said.
She acknowledged that a small number of legislators had exited but maintained that their departure had not significantly affected the party’s strength.
“The MPs who have left are five. More than 90 MPs are united in the party,” the governor said.
Wanga, who also serves as the party’s national chairperson, further pointed to the party’s gubernatorial leadership, saying most ODM governors remain loyal to the party.
“We have 15 governors in the party. Only one has left. The other 14 are in the party and are supporting the broad-based leadership under Oburu Odinga,” she said.
Her remarks come at a time when ODM has been facing internal disagreements that have seen leaders split into rival camps, raising questions about the party’s unity and future political direction.
Despite the divisions, Wanga said the party remains intact and capable of competing for power in the next year’s general election. “Saying that the party has collapsed are not saying the truth,” she said.
She expressed confidence that ODM will continue to play a central role in the country’s politics, either by forming the next government or joining a governing coalition.
The governor’s statement signals efforts by the party leadership to reassure supporters and counter perceptions of instability following recent political developments.
ODM has for years remained one of the country’s dominant political parties, with a strong support base across several regions and significant representation in Parliament and county governments. Wanga’s remarks also highlight ODM’s intention to remain a major player in national politics despite ongoing internal challenges.
