Africa-Press – Kenya. Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary Festus Ng’eno on Tuesday hosted a high-level delegation from FSD Africa led by Chief Executive Officer Mark Napier at his Nairobi office, in talks aimed at strengthening collaboration on carbon markets and climate finance.
The meeting focused on building strategic partnerships between FSD Africa and the State Department for Environment and Climate Change.
Key on the agenda was advancing Kenya’s carbon markets framework and supporting the Climate Change Directorate (CCD) and the Designated National Authority (DNA).
Ng’eno underscored the need to bolster institutional capacity within the climate change directorate, which is spearheading the implementation of Kenya’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP), greenhouse gas inventory processes and other climate action programmes.
On carbon markets, the Principal Secretary reaffirmed that the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) serves as Kenya’s Designated National Authority, mandated to oversee, regulate and approve carbon market projects to ensure alignment with the country’s sustainable development goals.
He noted that the DNA is legally empowered to guide and deliver on carbon market initiatives while safeguarding transparency, integrity and national benefit.
“Let us be measurable and accountable for the funding we provide,” Ng’eno said, calling for robust monitoring, reporting and verification systems to guarantee impact and value for climate finance investments.
Napier reaffirmed FSD Africa’s commitment to mobilising climate finance and strengthening investment capacity, saying closer collaboration would help unlock sustainable financing solutions and position Kenya as a leader in credible carbon markets in Africa.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from both institutions, signalling deepening cooperation to accelerate climate action and green growth.
They included the Director of the Climate Change Directorate Pacifica Ogola, and the Head of Legal Services Linah Meeme.
The FSD Africa delegation included Teresa Reich, Reshma Shah and Lucy Nyoike.
