Africa-Press – Kenya. Police in Kwale county have seized 1,858 rolls of cannabis sativa and arrested a suspect in a targeted raid on a suspected drug den in Msambweni, in a crackdown that highlights narcotics trafficking along the Coast.
Officers from Diani Police Station stormed Mwakipeku Village in Kinondo Ward, where they recovered the haul of bhang, which investigators believe points to a wider distribution network supplying drugs within the region.
The suspect was arrested at the scene and remains in custody pending arraignment, while police secure the narcotics as key evidence.
The size of the seizure has raised concern among security officials, who say the operation has opened new leads into what they believe could be an organised supply chain behind the trade, with investigations now focused on tracing the source and mapping out the network.
Police say the raid is part of ongoing enforcement efforts targeting not only users, but also financiers and distributors sustaining the illegal drug trade.
The development comes against a backdrop of growing concern over drug abuse in Kwale, particularly among young people, where authorities increasingly link narcotics to rising petty crime, school dropouts, and social instability.
Residents in Msambweni described the area as one that has struggled with drug use, saying the raid reflects a problem that has been building beneath the surface.
Local leaders have called for sustained enforcement to ensure the networks behind the trade are fully dismantled, warning that isolated raids without follow-through risk allowing the problem to resurface.
At the same time, there are growing calls for a dual approach that combines crackdowns with rehabilitation, with community voices stressing that while traffickers must face the law, many users need support to break dependency.
Investigators are now pursuing additional suspects believed to be linked to the supply chain, as authorities widen the scope of the probe beyond the initial arrest.
The seizure is being treated as a critical breakthrough, not just for the quantity recovered, but for the intelligence it may yield on how narcotics are moved and distributed across the Coast.
Police have signaled that more targeted operations are expected as they tighten surveillance on suspected drug corridors in the region.
For many residents, the raid sends a clear signal that enforcement is intensifying, but also underscores the depth of a drug problem that continues to take root in vulnerable communities.
With investigations ongoing, the focus now shifts to whether authorities can convert this bust into a wider takedown of the network behind it, an outcome that could significantly disrupt the flow of narcotics in Kwale.
