Africa-PressKenya. Tokyo 2020 Olympics 1,500 meters Silver medalist Timothy Cheruiyot has been promoted to the rank of Senior Superintendent of Prisons.

His promotion followed a directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday after meeting representatives of the Kenyan Olympic team, at State House Mombasa.

Cheruiyot’s promotion ceremony was presided over by Commissioner General of Prisons Wycliffe Ogallo, at the Prisons headquarters, Magereza House.

“Tokyo Olympic Silver Medalist in 1,500m, Mr Timothy Cheruiyot was today promoted to the rank of Senior Superintendent of Prisons from the rank of Chief Inspector of Prisons by the Commissioner-General of Prisons Mr Wycliffe O. Ogallo, CBS,” Kenya Prisons Service tweeted.

Prior to his promotion to SSP, Cheruiyot was a Chief Inspector of Prisons.

He won a silver medal in the men’s 1,500m final after finishing behind Olympic Champion Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

Uhuru on Monday said he will award Sh1 million to Gold medalists who participated in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Those who won silver will be given Sh750,000 and Sh500,000 for Bronze medalists.

The Head of State also announced a uniform token of Sh200,000 for all athletes and officials, including the Paralympics team, participating in delayed Summer Games

Eliud Kipchoge, Peres Jepchirchir, Faith Kipyegon and Emmanuel Korir won gold, while Timothy Cheruiyot, Ferguson Rotich, Hellen Obiri and Brigid Kosgei scooped silver medals in their respective categories.

Hyvin Kiyeng and Benjamin Kigen took bronze after finishing third in their categories.

The President thanked the Olympians for their outstanding performances that saw Kenya top the African medal chart.
