Africa-Press – Kenya. At least 14 students have been apprehended over clashes that erupted following the Manchester United and Liverpool match on Sunday, October 24.
The students of Dr. Krapf Memorial Secondary School in Rabai, Kilifi County were apprehended for allegedly damaging property after being denied permission to watch the English Premier match that saw Manchester United thrashed 5 – 0 by the mighty Liverpool.
The rowdy students vandalised one of their dormitories and even attempted to torch it on Monday night. The targeted dormitory houses over 160 learners.
The law enforcement officers in the area confirmed the unfortunate incident.
“The dormitory that they set alight did not burn completely,” Rabai Sub County Police Commander, Fred Abuga, told The Standard.
Following the unrest and protests, the school administration has been compelled to shut down the institution for a week. Forms One and Four are set to report back to school on Tuesday, November 2, while Forms Two and Three learners are expected back a day later.
According to probe into the matter, the students took to arms after the school administration denied them a chance to watch the match. The game was slated to air from 6:30pm.
Between 6:30pm and 7:30pm, the students usually take their supper. They, thereafter, go for a two-hour prep session between 8pm and 10pm. But this time varies in some institutions which go for supper as early as 5:30pm to 6:30pm.
Due to their acts of protests, the school administration has ordered all the students to report back with complete Term Two fees among other mandatory requirements.
Cases of schools protests have been on the rise. On Tuesday, October 26, Kericho High School was closed indefinitely after students went on strike at dawn.
The school became the fourth school to be closed in the area in three days.
