Musa unfazed by Hit Squad's debacle as BFK hints at an overhaul

Africa-Press – Kenya. After a losing streak that punctuated Hit Squad’s miserable run at the World Boxing Championships in Serbia, Boxing Federation of Kenya has sent a passionate plea to budding pugilists to emerge from their cocoons and show what they are capable of.

All the 13 Kenyan boxers lost their bouts as the country’s dream of a boxing resurgence reminiscent of the 80’s crumbled into smithereens yet again.

Musa’s attempt to turn around the fortunes of his charges fell flat on the face as they emphatically crushed one after another on unanimous point decision. Not even the duo of captain Nicholas Okoth and Africa Zone 3 gold medalist Elly Ajowi came close to a convincing performance.

However, the coach described the catastrophe as a perfect learning experience even as the team deliberately shifted focus to the upcoming Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games scheduled for July.

“It was never going to be easy for us considering the high calibre of boxers that graced the championships. I’m sure our boxers picked up some crucial lessons heading into the Commonwealth Games,” said Juma.

Meanwhile, BFK communications director Dancun Kuria has urged budding boxers to turn up in large numbers at the forthcoming President Jamal Championships for possible identification.

“We are now on reset mode, rebuilding the team from scratch. Therefore all boxers who believe they have what it takes to represent the flag better and have been craving for a chance to be tested to show they are the best… see you on November 17-20 at Nyayo Stadium for the championship,” he said.

“This Championship will also double up as team selection for the forthcoming AIBA Women World Championship and 2022 Commonwealth Games. Come prove yourself and claim our spot,” added Kuria.

Kuria apologised to local boxing enthusiasts following the miserable outing. “We know it has been equally tough for you watching us lose bout after another. We shall come back better and stronger to make you proud next time.”

“As we exit men’s World Championship, we would sincerely like to thank AIBA for organizing such a wonderful event, Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage.

“We would also like to thank all media houses that hosted us and BFK President Anthony ‘Jamal’ Otieno together with our able Executive for all the logistical support that ensured the team had good environment to prepare and smooth travel to Belgrade,” he said.

Kuria added: “To our coaches and Boxers who dared to take up the challenge, we know you worked tirelessly for it. You gave your all but unfortunately, it wasn’t good enough. Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose so let’s maintain focus and keep working hard.”

“For those who made their Hit Squad and/or World Championship debut, you now know how tough and demanding competing on the global stage is, pump it up! and we wish you success in the coming national team trials and future assignments.”
