Africa-Press – Kenya. Champions KCB face Impala in the semifinals of the Floodlit Rugby tournament this Saturday.
The bankers, who are also four-time Kenya Cup champions, are keen to start their season with a bang and defend their trophy as they eye a fifth title later in the season.
Curtis Olago’ charges have won the Floodlit event a record eight times with their first win having been in 2005. They also won in 2007 and dominated between 2013-2015 and 2017-2019.
The second semifinal will pit 2019 runners up Menengai Oilers and Quins.
In the varsity category, defending champions Strtahmore Leos have withdrawn from the event.
The semifinal pairing will see Blak Blad face Catholic University of Eastern Africa as Mean Machine have a date with United States International University. The final is slated for November 13.
Unlike the previous years, where the tournament was played across three weekends, this year it will be restricted to two weekends.
The event organisers, Impala Rugby Club, have said they will only allow 1,500 fans to attend the two-week rugby extravaganza as part of the Covid-19 regulations in line with the Ministry of Sports protocols. Tickets will cost 500 for the day.
Club’s vice-chairman, Charles Mbogo, said preparations for the event are almost complete. “We expect an exciting and competitive tournament because teams are in pre-season shaping up for the start of the Kenya Cup season,” added Mbogo.
Elsewhere, KRU Championship outfit South Coast Pirates have appointed Kevin Amiani as their new head coach ahead of the new season.
The club confirmed the appointment days after he received his Level Two coaching certification. After the completion of the level two certification, the club feels he is the best-qualified candidate.
