Africa-Press – Kenya. Police based in Laikipia County are investigating a murder at the Miteta General Service Unit (GSU) camp where an officer reportedly shot his colleague dead after an argument.
According to Laikipia County Police Commander, John Nyoike, the suspect opened shot his colleague on the head after a heated debate over a dispute yet to be unravelled by the detectives.
“A disagreement ensued between the two GSU constables over an unknown issue when one of them picked his rifle and opened fire, shooting the other one on the head. He killed him on the spot.”
“After the incident, the assailant picked up his belongings that were packed in a bag. He also picked up his rifle and fled towards the conservancy,” he pointed out.
Police boss Nyoike intimated that the officer further started shooting indiscriminately at the camp as he fled towards the Laikipia Nature Conservancy.
Officers have since been dispatched to the area to pursue, track and capture him.
“We have dispatched a team of officers to pursue the attacker,” Nyoike stated.
The body of the victim was taken to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem.
Murder cases amongst police officers have been on the rise in the recent past, signaling a worrying trend of mental issues within the security sector.
In a bid to curb the menace, the National Police Service (NPS) recently employed 59 psychological counselors to offer support to officers across the 47 counties.
Police Commission Vice-Chair, Alice Otwala, stated that most officers undergo different levels of mental stress and hence needed to undergo medical assessments.
“Police join the service when they are fit and complete, they are checked thoroughly every sphere of their bodies; the dental, the physique but due to the nature of their work, they sometimes get accidents or injured by enemies,” she stated.
