Six face three-year jail term for bhang possession in Narok

Africa-Press – Kenya. Six people in Narok are facing a three-year jail term for bhang possession should they fail to pay a fine of Sh500,000 each.

A Narok court found them guilty of possessing 4.5 kilogrammes of bhang worth Sh35,000.

Felix Sinamwaga (22), Alex Mwangi (19), Moses Kudate (25), Mageo Kudate (33), David Nguno (68) and Peter Salbabi (21) were arrested on June 10, 2022 at Topoti area in Narok North subcounty.

Narok Senior Resident Magistrate Adelaide Sisenda found them guilty after sufficient evidence was adduced before which proved that the culprits were in possession of the narcotics.

The court heard that the six were casual labourers at a farm in the area and they decided to buy bhang for consumption after the day’s work.

They were, however, arrested by police officers who were tipped off by members of the public who suspected that the six were in possession of bhang.

In mitigation, the convicts asked for forgiveness and promised not to repeat the illegal activity again.

The magistrate however said bhang smoking had become rampant in the area and was destroying many young lives.

She therefore sentenced them to three years imprisonment or a fine of Sh500, 000 each as a deterrent.
