Africa-Press – Kenya. AFC Leopards’ custodian Levis Opiyo has pledged a better season for the fans after penning a new two-year contract at the Den.

Opiyo said Leopards would be heading into their assignments with an edge, having maintained most of their squad from the preceding season.

“I am happy to have renewed my contract with this beloved club. My target for this season is to perform better than last season,” Opiyo said.

“We have lost only one player this season which means we will have a great bond as a team,” Opiyo said.

The agile goalkeeper sealed his spot in the starting lineup after joining the Den in November 2021. Opiyo found a home at the Den after stints with rivals Gor Mahia and Wazito FC.

“To our wonderful fans, I promise we will work hard as a team to deliver great results.”

Opiyo’s future at the club had been uncertain after he became a free agent in August following the expiry of his one-year contract.

He, however, turned down lush offers from rival clubs to commit his future at the 12-time Kenyan champions ahead of the 2022/2023 campaign.

He had reportedly attracted interest from his former side Nairobi City Stars and Bidco United. The latter was seeking to plug the hole left by first-choice keeper Brian Opondo, who decamped to champions Tusker.

Opiyo also confirmed having been approached by a foreign top-flight club.

“It is true I had some offers in the ongoing transfer window including one offer from an overseas club. I have, however, decided to commit my future to AFC Leopards after they agreed to clear my arrears,” Opiyo added.

So far, three senior players have committed their future at the club. They include midfielder Cliff Nyakeya, defender Washington Munene, and striker Oja Olaniyi

Meanwhile, the club has been dealt a heavy blow following the departure of striker John Mark Makwatta who has signed a two-year deal with Botswana top-tier side Gaborone United.

Leopards had expressed intent of offering the striker a permanent deal following his loan from Kenya Police at the beginning of the preceding season.

He joins compatriot midfielder Duncan Otieno who has also penned a two-year deal with Gaborone from Kenya Police. Makwatta landed a deal with the side following successful trials that lasted for two weeks.
