Africa-Press – Kenya. Outgoing Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has said that President Uhuru Kenyatta should have congratulated president-elect William Ruto.

He said despite their differences, it would have been an honour to congratulate him as the next in power.

Wambugu said it’s time for Kenyans to move on together as one nation, whether one voted for Ruto or not and strive to make Kenya better.

“I know the 6.9 million of us who did not vote for Ruto are upset, big time. But in respect of the 7.1 million who voted for Ruto and to help Kenya move forward, Uhuru should have congratulated Ruto,” he said in his Facebook page.

Speaking hours after the verdict, Uhuru reiterated his commitment to overseeing a smooth handover and peaceful transition of power to the next regime.

He said the handover process is already in progress under the Assumption of Office Committee which began its work as early as August 10.

“I intend to oversee a smooth transition to the next administration and all the necessary orders to facilitate these processes have already been issued,” Uhuru said.

Ruto’s win was upheld by Supreme Court on Monday.

Reading the verdict on Monday, Chief Justice Martha Koome said Ruto garnered 50 per cent plus one of the votes cast.
