Africa-Press – Kenya. Debutants Nduru Boys have warned they are no pushovers as the national secondary school’s rugby 7’s gets underway at Nakuru High School today (Saturday).
Nduru Boys coach J.J Masime said: “Our target this year was to reach nationals and win the national trophy next year. However, we will not be pushovers. I think the draw is also fair.”
Speaking after the draws and fixtures were announced on Friday, Masime said he would not put his boys under pressure. “This is a young team making their debut at the nationals and I want them to enjoy themselves,” he added.
Nduru, the Kisii County champions will face familiar foes St Mary’s School, Yala, debutants Butula Boys, and Mazeras from Coast in Pool ‘D’.
During the regional championships played at Asumbi Teachers Training College, Nduru defeated Yala 12-0 in the preliminaries but Yala avenged the loss by defeating Nduru 12-7 in the finals.
On Saturday, Nduru will make their nationals bow against Butula Boys while Yala will tackle Mazeras.
Yala coach Ken Mukok, who is a 15’s rugby specialist said: “It’s a perfect draw for us. I’m confident of winning two games which will enable us play in the quarters. My target is to play in the final.”
In Pool A, Ofafa Jericho, Magumo, Menengai and Upper Hill School will square it out for two places in the quarter-finals while Pool B’ will feature Nanyuki High, Alliance High, Shimba Hills, and Kabianga.
Newcomers Koyonzo, All Saints, Kangaru and Ngong will battle it out in Pool C. Koyonzo coach Eliud Okwemba said: “We want to lift the national title. Though this is our first time at the nationals, nothing is impossible. We want to represent Kenya in Arusha.”
Koyonzo beat the odds to excel in the Western region, where they overcame established names like St Peter’s Mumias, Musingu and Kakamega High to make it to the nationals.
