Africa-Press – Kenya. National Youth Service is keen to turn the institution into a center of excellence as far as sports are concerned.
NYS director general, Matilda Sakwa asserted that they will not sit on the periphery as other institutions shine in sports across the country.
Speaking during the NYS Athletics Championships at the NYS Turbo Field Unit in Kakamega County, Sakwa said there are plans to revive sports in all their institutions and compete at the top level.
“NYS has been missing out on sports and now we want to be part of the national sporting programs.”
“We have registered with Athletics Kenya and all our athletics programs will be included in the federation’s calendar starting January 2023,” she said.
She said the move to rope in AK is to give their students a chance to be part of the national team.
“We have now officially registered with AK in a bid to give these young men and women a chance to represent the country. We also want to produce the likes of Ferdinand Omanyala and I believe this is very possible if the calibre of players we have is anything to go by,” she revealed.
She revealed their next stop is rugby and they hope to come up with both the men’s and women’s teams.
“We shall also register our teams with the Kenya Rugby Union. At NYS, there is nothing impossible and I am determined to make it work,” said Sakwa.
