Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya will send a team of just two players to the Africa Junior Championships slated for November 12-20 in Algeria, Chess Kenya president Bernard Wanjala has said.
Wanjala said they were forced to scale down the team from six players due to financial constraints.
He revealed that they will now deploy national junior champion Robert Mcligeyo and African Schools Individual champion Mercy Ingado.
Ingado replaces Erica Muturi, who could not travel due to school commitments.
Wanjala said their biggest challenge was in the processing of travel documents and were lucky the traveling pair had their documents sorted already.
Meanwhile, Wanjala observed that training is going on uninterrupted despite the fact that the selected duo is still in school.
“The players have personalised trainers and I believe the training is making a positive impact. They do not train full-time because of school but so far, so good. They seem to have mastered the art of balancing between chess and school work,” he said, adding that he believes in the duo’s quality.
“They are some of our best players. I expect them to do better now that they have won in some of these competitive games,” he said.
