Africa-Press – Kenya. Strathmore University Swords calmed Storms 46-41 in a Kenya National Basketball League encounter at Nyayo Stadium gymnasium on Sunday.

Ronny Owino’s charges got off to a flying start, taking a strong 20-8 cushion in the first quarter and built a 32-21 cushion at the breather.

“We started well but our offensive execution was not good in the last half,” said Owino.

“Overall, the girls played well with a lot of determination. They also lost some good chances under the rim when well placed.”

Storms coach Abel Nson said lack of action, where they were out of the league for six weeks, did them in.

“We played a really good defence but we did not compensate ourselves by scoring at the other end,” said Nson.

Zetech University Sparks dimmed University of Nairobi ‘Dynamites’ 66-36 in another ladies’ clash to complete a fruitful weekend.

This victory pushed coach Maurice Obilo’s girls to the second spot behind leaders Kenya Ports Authority with 21 points. KPA have 22.

“The girls played well. I am happy. There are some few things I am trying to correct. The next few weeks will be crucail if we are to be where we want to be for the second leg,” Obilo added.

In another fixture, Kenyatta University ‘Oryx’ suffered a 57-33 loss to former champions Equity Bank Hawks.

The bankers went ahead 20-11 in the first half and had 15 points from Lindsey Nandakho. Dorine Chelagat replied with 12 for KU.

“We had a bad first half but my girls did well in the last two quarters. I am impressed with that effort and we look forward to our next game,” said KU tactician Caleb Osewe.

In the Lower Division, Strathmore University’s junior side beat Scarlet 51-38. In the men’s match up, Stanbic Bank beat National Bank of Kenya ‘Phoenix’ 91-72.
