Africa-Press – Kenya. The EACC has been able to recover Sh6.2 billion in the last year from assets recovery. EACC deputy chief executive officer Abdi Mohamud said it has reached a point where public officials are supposed to account for everything they own.
He spoke at Kenya School of Government during World Anti-Corruption Day celebrations on Friday. Mohamud said EACC has prioritised the recovery of stolen assets from public officials.
“It has resulted in the development of the law. We call it prove it or loose it. You have to account for what you own or loose it to the public and the courts have actually adapted that position,” he said.
“I want to mention that in the last one year alone EACC has recovered Sh6.2 billion of stolen assets and that is half the budget of EACC.”
The official said EACC realised that what drives people to get involved in corruption is actually the desire to amass wealth or to acquire wealth. “Its important for us to deprive them of that illegally acquired wealth,” he said.
