Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya Tong IL Moo Doo team is banking on their multi-talented squad to defend their title in the Mombasa Championship starting on Friday, Federation chairman Clarence Mwakio has hinted.
The three-day competition is set for between December 16-18 with the annual tournament marking it’s 10th edition. Kenya topped the medal standings with 39 gold, 33 silver and 52 bronze across the three categories of competition thus— bon, sparring and special technique — last year.
The team is also expected to charge for medals in three-team categories as well, making it an enthralling affair altogether. “Jasiri are ready to show the world once again why Kenya is the team to beat,” Mwakio said.
“We have versatile players who can compete in all forms and that gives us an edge over our rivals. Plus, there’s the home advantage but retaining the title will be the sole agenda.”
Kenya will present a team of 50 athletes who have been training at their respective clubs. The team had a 10-day training camp to properly hone their skills. Foreign teams were expected to start trooping in on Monday.
So far 29 countries have confirmed participation. They include Nigeria, Zambia, Bukina Faso, Republic of Congo, Cote D’ivoire, DRC, Central Africa Republic, Angola, Philippines, Nepal, USA and Paraguay. Others are Japan, Korea, Thailand, India, Iran, Turkey, Russia, Denmark, Ethiopia, Brazil, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Denmark, Pakistan and Italy as well as hosts.
The Philippines gave Kenya a run for their money in 2021 as they finished second with 45 medals (19 gold, 19 silver and seven bronze). Meanwhile, Grandmaster Takamitsu Hoshiko, the President of the Tong-IL-Moo-Doo Federation arrived in Kenya over the weekend.
