Africa-Press – Kenya. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has maintained studious silence as infighting and open supremacy battles rock the Jubilee Party. Uhuru’s leadership role in the former ruling party ends in 2026.

In February 2021, the former President was elected the Jubilee Party leader for second five-year term. However, after his retirement, Uhuru has been quiet on party matters, with former Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni taking the centre stage.

Uhuru’s silence comes in the wake of the suspension of Kioni as the secretary general by the National Executive Committee. Kioni has been replaced with EALA MP Kanini Kega.

Also suspended are Treasurer Kagwe Gichohi and vice chairman David Murathe. Kioni was suspended on claims of gross misconduct. The wrangles in Jubilee ensued after a section of the MPs visited State House leading to a rift that has pitted members against each other.

Some of officials from the party have largely remained critical of Ruto’s administration while others have warmed up to the President. The MPs friendly to the Kenya Kwanza administration have met Ruto at State House on two occasions; in January and as recently as Wednesday, February 8.

They include EALA MP Kanini Kega, Nominated MP Sabina Chege, Irene Njoki (Bahati), Zachary Thuku ( Kinangop), Shadrach Mwiti (South Imenti), Mark Mwenje ( Embakasi West), Amos Mwago ( Starehe), Dan Karitho ( Igembe Central), Stanley Muthama (Lamu West) and Joseph Githuku (Lamu Senator).

The recent meeting saw Ruto holding talks with 32 MPs from the Jubilee party. During the meeting, the Jubilee legislators pledged to work and support the government.

“We want to be part of this government having been together before the last elections,” Eldas MP Adan Keynan said.

“At this rate, we will close down our Jubilee house and join you because we are one,” Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere said.

“We don’t want to feel left out in your government so we kindly request you to include us in your development plans,” nominated MP Sabina Chege added. Uhuru is yet to convene a meeting with the party members to chat the way forward.
