Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) Super Cup earlier planned for this weekend has been pushed forward by a week, officials disclosed yesterday. KHF fixtures coordinator George Asimeto said they decided to push the 10-team event to next week to give teams more time to prepare.
The winners in both categories will represent the country in the Africa Championship in Tunisia. “We have decided to push the tournament up by a week for teams to prepare adequately for this tournament. The weather in the last few days has not been favourable and as such most teams haven’t trained well,” Said Asimeto.
He went on: “But this has since improved and we should expect to see quality handball games. Right now, I am working on the fixtures which I will release before the end of the day Monday.”
Super Cup women’s champion Nairobi Water Queens coach Jack Ochieng said his team is already in strict training and still remains very much the team to beat in the event set for Nyayo Stadium.
“The team preparations are in high gear. I am looking forward to trying my new signings who will also participate in the league,” Ochieng said adding: “We want to retain the cup we have won since its inception.”
Water Queens won the national league for the 10th year in a row and Ochieng believes his girls can also be as dominant in this competition as they have been in the league. They were unbeaten in 22 matches.
They will have to shake off league runners-up Ulinzi Sharks, National Cereals and Produce Board and Bungoma-based Rangers if they are to retain the trophy they have won five times since its inception.
The women’s teams will play on a round-robin format while the six men’s teams have been put into two groups of three teams each. National champions NCPB, GSU, and Black Mamba are placed in Pool A while Pool B will see Ulinzi battle Strathmore and Kenyatta University.
