Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenyan police announced the death of at least 11 militants from the Al-Shabaab group during an intelligence operation near the Kenyan-Somali border.
According to a police statement, the operation was carried out by a special operations unit, with air support, after intelligence indicated a gathering of about 30 suspected militants belonging to the Somali group in a temporary camp in Mandera County.
The Kenyan police stated that they were planning to attack villages along the border, adding that seven of the militants were seriously injured, while the others fled across the border into Somalia.
Three PKM machine guns, approximately 409 rounds of ammunition, and several documents believed to belong to the militants were seized. Among the documents found were what authorities described as receipts for mandatory taxes allegedly collected by the armed group in the areas under their control.
The Kenyan police indicated that these records could provide valuable intelligence on how Al-Shabaab finances its operations and manages the areas under its control through taxes and collections at checkpoints.
The operation aimed to thwart the planned attack before it could be executed and to prevent another assault across the border in northeastern Kenya.
This raid is part of an intensified campaign by Kenyan security agencies targeting armed networks operating along the porous Kenyan-Somali border, where authorities have ramped up intelligence operations to prevent attacks. Al-Shabaab, whose militants have a history of deadly attacks within Kenya, has not commented.
