Wanyonyi fends off Kinyamal to bag 800m crown at Kasarani

Africa-Press – Kenya. The 2021 World Under 20 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi was in scintillating form, timing a personal best and world lead of 1:42.32 to bag the men’s 800m at the Kip Keino Classic at Moi Stadium, Kasarani on Saturday.

Wanyonyi breasted the tape ahead of Commonwealth Games champion Wycliffe Kinyamal who emerged second in a meet record of 1:46.36. Olympics 1500m silver medalist Timothy Cheruiyot wrapped up the top three in 1:44.99. Wanyonyi said a bet he made with his coach before the race inspired him to victory.

“My coach promised to reward me if I would run a meeting record and he must be happy now. I had prepared well for the race and I wanted to retain my title and winning is a good indication that I’m on the right track ahead of the World Championships,” Wanyonyi said. The win was his second in the Kip Keino Classic after last year’s win where he clocked 1:45.01 to take top honours.
