Africa-Press – Kenya. Veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga on Saturday referred to President William Ruto as his brother and friend. The move could signal climb down by Raila who has sustained attacks on the government since the last polls.
Putting political differences aside, Raila appeared to recoginise Ruto’s presidency despite his past resistance against the government. “My brother William Samoei Ruto….” Raila said as he recognised Ruto during the burial of Mama Mukami in Kinangop, Nyandarua county.
The former prime minister has been attacking Ruto, saying he did not win the August 9, 2022 general elections against him. Despite the electoral commission having declared Ruto the winner of the polls and the supreme court having validated the win, Raila has insisted he won the polls.
On Saturday, Raila warned the government against oppressing the people saying like they did during the colonial era, they will use defensive violence to defend themselves against oppression.
“When police use force against protesters that is oppressive violence and when the citizens resist against oppression that is called defensive violence,” Raila said. He said when former South African President Nelson Mandera was detained, he spoke of how citizens can use defensive resistance to defend themselves.
