Africa-Press – Kenya. Michael Karanga was the best Kenyan golfer in round one of the Africa Region Four golf championships that teed off on Wednesday morning at the par 71 Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The four Kenyans led by captain Dennis Maara (Limuru), youngster Elvis Muigua (Kiambu) and Kenya Railways’ John Lejirma, combined their efforts to end the day in the second position.

The quartet managed 16 over par 229 behind the leaders Uganda with nine over par 222.

Team Ethiopia remained third with 26 over par 239, followed by Tanzania with 28 over 241. Rwanda trailed after posting 33 over 246 ahead of Thursday’s second round.

Karanga fired level behind Ugandan Godfrey Nsubuga who has been playing in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) series in the country before being named in the Ugandan team in the five- nation tournament.

Burundi pulled out of this year’s championship at the last minute.

Kenya will be seeking to defend the title they won last year.

Another battle looms between Kenya and Uganda on Thursday. The two rivals have dominated the championships for long.

Muigua made the team after winning the Trans Nzoia Open in Kitale.

Karanga remains the maestro with five KAGC wins- Coronation Cup (Nakuru), Sigona Bowl, Windsor Classic, Muthaiga Open and Railway Invitation.

Lejirma won the Marshall (Njoro) while Maara who won the Winston Churchill title at Thika Sports.
