Lakers sweating on the fitness of Alice and Maureen ahead of Wolverines crunch clash

Africa-Press – Kenya. Lakers coach Austin Tuju has said Alice and Maureen Owiti will be assessed ahead of their match against Wolverines on June 11. The twins got injured in the Lakers’ 2-0 win over Sailors in the women’s hockey Premier League match at their Kisumu backyard on Saturday.

Alice, who is the Lakers’ captain, opened scoring in the seventh minute before Aurelia Opondo’s 58th goal guaranteed maximum points for the team. “We are sweating on the fitness of Alice and Maureen. They felt uncomfortable in the game and had to be withdrawn but we do not know the extent of the injuries. We will monitor them before the Wolverines’ game,” Tuju said.

The tactician added that a change in formation was crucial in registering the win. “We are used to playing with a lone striker but we deployed a supporting attacker just behind Opondo. Sailors found it impossible to handle our attack”.

A win against Wolverines will enable the Lakers to move to second on the log. Tuju said the Lakers’ eyes are trained on the league title, adding that second place should be the bare minimum.

“We are going for nothing short of winning the league this time round. We have to qualify for the Africa Cup for Club Championships next year in Blantyre, Malawi.”
