Africa-Press – Kenya. Airtel Money customers can now purchase electricity for free after a new deal with Kenya Power.

The mobile money firm is targeting to lure the 9.01 million customers connected to the grid with the free transactions via its payment platform.

Currently the power distributor has 6.9 million subscribers using the prepaid meters and 2.1 million on post-paid meters.

Airtel Money Managing Director Anne-Kinuthia Otieno said the initiative will benefit postpaid and prepaid Kenya Power customers and is aimed at cushioning consumers against the tough economic times.

Currently it costs Sh9 to purchase Sh1,000 worth of electricity for the prepaid meters.

The offer will run for six months after which the electricity payments will start attracting transaction fees.

“We are now glad to offer Kenyans this solution where they will enjoy zero transaction cost for the next six months when they make their electricity payments,” said Otieno.

She said the cost saving on the charge per transaction would enable customers to utilise their money to other purchases.

“We are happy to have Airtel on-board as one of our revenue collection agencies for our post-paid and prepaid customers. This strategic partnership offers our valued customers a seamless payment channel, ensuring enhanced convenience and satisfaction,” said Kenya Power Managing Director and CEO Joseph Siror.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) in April approved Kenya Power’s request for a review of electricity tariffs.

The new tariffs, classified consumers into three categories based on their monthly consumption.

The first group is the low consumers who use up to 30 units per month, the second band are those who consume more than 30 but less than a hundred units, while the third band covers those who consume more than 100 units per month.
