Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has said community health workers will be equipped with Sh3.5 billion to enable them offer preventive healthcare across the country.

Speaking during a Sunday service at Christ Church Cathedral in Kakamega County, the President said the government will train the health promoters to handle minor illnesses at the community level.

“Our hospitals are full of people with minor ailments, which if managed early will decongest our hospitals,” he said.

Ruto said this is part of the government’s commitment to ensure devolution is successful. He, however, said the government will not borrow from foreign lenders to run the devolved units.

On the cost of living, Ruto said government’s focus is on increasing food production through support programmes such as fertiliser subsidy. “We will progressively invest in agriculture and support our farmers because increasing food production is the solution to reducing the cost of food,” he said.

Those present during the church service included Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, governors Ferdinand Barasa (Kakamega), Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi). A host of MPs and MCAs also attended the service.
