Africa-Press – Kenya. The organisers of the Tisap Sevens in Eldoret believe the event’s postponement is a blessing in disguise as they race against time to stage a successful tournament.
The event, which was set for this weekend, has been moved to the first weekend of September. It will be the first time in five years that the event will be heading back to Eldoret since the Sepetuka Sevens of 2018.
The organisers, led by Ali Mbaraka, said the postponement has given them time to solicit more sponsorships as well as an opportunity to learn from the events to be held in between.
“This is a big relief for us. We will have more time to plan for our meeting. In addition, we will also have an opportunity to benchmark what our colleagues will be doing,” said Mbaraka.
The circuit will start with the Dala Sevens on July 1-2 at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu after the Kenya Rugby Union revised the calendar. “Right now we are supporting our friends at Dala 7s and Driftwood to have successful events. If they succeed, we will also succeed,” he said.
“We shall use the time between now and September to lure some sponsors especially Uasin Gishu county government, to market the county as a sporting and tourism hub. We have to capitalise on sports to promote tourism in the region.”
Mbaraka reiterated that tickets for the event are already on sale with regular season tickets selling at Sh500 while the daily charges are set at Sh300.
The daily VIP tickets will cost Sh1,000 while the season tickets will sell at Sh1,500. The joint bid to host the circuit was done between the Eldoret RFC and Moi University.
“We are hoping that most students will have returned for the 2023/2024 academic year since many teams in Eldoret depend heavily on university students. At the same time, the biggest population in Eldoret are students who will support the circuit once in school,” said Mbaraka.
