Team Kenya is ready to compete, says coach Kesekwa

Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya men’s handball coach, Titus Kesekwa is confident his charges have what it takes to compete with any team at the Africa Beach Games slated for June 23-30 in Hammamet, Tunisia.

“Each evening we review our performance. I allow the players to point out mistakes and correct each other. I feel ready, and our main target this time is to reach the finals and bring glory home,” said Kesekwa.

The ten players that were selected after the Kenya Beach Games held in Malindi in March are currently training at Buntwani Waterpark in Malindi.

Kesekwa acknowledged the team’s focus on addressing their weaknesses, as they aim to capitalise on the experience gained from their previous participation in the Africa Beach Games

“As the coach, I have full confidence in the abilities of my team. When you look at our agility, speed, blocking shots, and communication, the team has really improved,” he said.

“This will be our second time in this competition. Our opponents are the same from the last tournament and so we know how they play and we know how to beat them,” he added.

The team will face an intense battle against Morocco and Zambia in Group A. The opening match will see the 2019 bronze medalists Morocco go head-to-head with Kenya in a highly anticipated encounter on June 24.

In Group B Togo, Nigeria and Libya will battle it out while hosts Tunisia will entertain Algeria and Mali in Group C.

The top teams from each group, along with the best runner-up, will advance to the semifinals on the afternoon of the first day of the competition. The final will be played on June 26 at 5:30 pm Kenyan time.

The teams will have to bear with the high temperatures in Tunisia that are expected to reach 30 degrees but the conditions may be favourable compared to the challenging climate experienced during the 2019 edition in Cape Verde.

“The temperatures here are at 26 degrees so it will not be difficult for my players to adapt to the weather conditions in Tunisia,” Kesekwa noted.
