Africa-Press – Kenya. The Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) under-18 women’s championship has been pushed forward for the second time and will now kick off on June 29-July 11 in Nairobi.
The tournament was initially set to start on June 3 before it was rescheduled for June 24 in order to give teams more time to prepare for the tournament. Cecafa have also confirmed that seven teams will participate in the tournament.
“We are happy that finally, we shall have seven teams taking part in this season-opening tournament. We expect a very competitive event,” said Auka Gecheo, the Cecafa secretary general.
Kenya’s Junior Starlets will welcome Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda and Zanzibar in the championship. The draw for the tournament will be conducted later this week with four teams placed in one of the groups and three others in the second pool.
Currently, the Junior Starlets are holding their training sessions at the Nyayo Stadium in readiness for the annual competition that is making its return after two years.
After the Cecafa Under-18 Women’s Championship, Ethiopia will host the Cecafa U-23 Championship in July. The Kagame Cecafa Club Championship and the Zonal Women’s Champions League qualifiers are slated for August in Uganda. The Cecafa Under-18 and U-15 boys tournaments are also scheduled to take place later in the year.
