Africa-Press – Kenya. A new champion will be crowned on July 2 at the Gold Fields Trophy, the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) at the par 72 Kakamega Sports Club. This is after defending champion John Lejirma was disqualified in round one that teed off on June 30.

60 top amateurs are facing off in the three-day championship that will count for the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points as well as contributing to the KAGC individual and Club Trophy Rankings.
Nyanza golfer Thomas Oduor took an early lead after firing one under par 71 in round one ahead of Saturday’s second round before Sunday’s final. Oduor recorded crazy scores, sinking rare six birdies, eight pars, three bogeys and a double bogey to pronounce his presence in the Kakamega based club.
It was a good start when he recorded back to back birdies in 1, 2 and 3 in round one, with four pars in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th before dropping a shot in 3 and two in nine for level par 36.
His return recorded similar birdies in 10th, 11th and 17th parred in 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th a bogey in12th and double bogey in 18th for one under par 35 in the second nine.
He leads Vet Lab’s Ebill Omollo with five shots at three over par 75 with Kenya Railways’ Joseph Gathumbi completing top three in round one with (+4) as well as Nandi Bears’ Elly Barno, John Timbe from Nyali and Ugandan Godfrey Nsubuga of Mehta club in T3 76.
